Abstract
The economically important potato family, Solanaceae, is represented by six genera in Botswana. These are Datura, Lycium, Nicotiana, Physalis, Solanum and Withania. These are mostly herbs and small shrubs. They usually occur as weeds and in disturbed areas. Members of this family are important foods and medicines. Some, however, are poisonous, and their seeds often contaminate food stuffs. This article reviews the known medicinal uses and or hallucinogenic effects of members of the genus Datura in Botswana.
