Abstract

The use of IR and Mass spectroscopy in the R&D of natural drugs and pharmaceutical products has been reviewed highlighting the advantages of the techniques. IR spectroscopy has been applied to natural product composition analysis, product quality assessment and production control. Its disadvantages include the difficulty in quantification and interpreting the data, although recently developed instrumentation and computer algorithms have made this a lot easier. Mass spectrometry has both qualitative and quantitative uses. These include identifying unknown compounds, determining the isotopic composition of elements in a molecule, and determining the structure of a compound by observing its fragmentation.
