Abstract

4-Methylthiobenzaldehyde (1) was condensed with various arylketones (2) in the presence of potassium hydroxide to obtain a series of 1-aryl-3-(4-methylthiophenyl)-2-propene-1-ones (3). The compound (3) were brominated with bromine in chloroform to get dibromopropanones (4) later they were treated with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in presence of aqueous alkali to get 3,5-diaryllisoxazoles (5a-k). The structures of newly synthesized compounds are characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectroscopic studies and screened for their antimicrobial activities. The preliminary results revealed that some of the compounds exhibited promising antimicrobial activities
