Synthesis, Characterization and Antibacterial Activity of Imidazole Derivatives of 1,10-Phenanthroline and their Complexes

Abstract


Thirty Five new MnL1,CuL1,CoL1,NiL1,CrL1,FeL1 and ZnL1(L1=4-methyl(1H-imidazo[5,6-f][1,10]phenanthroline)-2-yl)phenol),MnL2,CuL2,CoL2,NiL2,CrL2,FeL2 and ZnL2 (L2 = 2-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10]phenanthroline-2-yl)-5-methoxyphenol), MnL3,CuL3,CoL3,NiL3,CrL3,FeL3 and ZnL3 (L34,CuL4,CoL4,NiL4,CrL4,FeL4 and ZnL4 (L4=4-Fluro Imidazo[5,6-f] 1,10-phenanthroline, MnL5,CuL5,CoL5,NiL5,CrL5,FeL5 and ZnL5 (L5=[4-Hydroxy phenyl]Imidazo [5,6-f]1,10-phenanthroline complexes were synthesized. L1, L2,L3,L4 and L5 ligands were prepared by the condensation of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione with 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde, paramethyl benzaldehyde ,2,4,6-Trimethoxy Benzaldehyde,4-Fluro Benzaldehyde,4-Hydroxy Benzaldehyde respectively. The structures of the compounds were determined by elemental analyses, IR,UV-visible and 1H-NMR. Antibacterial activity of the ligands and their metal complexes were tested against selected bacteria by disc diffusion method.
